1925 - 2024
Dr. Leonard Kahane, born in Winnipeg in 1925 to Romanian immigrants Elizabeth and Abraham Kahane, established himself as both a respected dental professional and a dedicated community arts supporter. After attending Riverview School and Gordon Bell, where he excelled in track and field, Leonard pursued his education at the University of Manitoba for his pre-medical studies and Bachelor of Arts degrees before earning his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) at Northwestern University in Chicago. His commitment to dental education extended to teaching part-time at the University of Manitoba School of Dentistry for many years, while also conducting sophisticated dental demonstrations across North America. Dr. Kahane's professional dedication extended beyond his practice when he and his wife Hope volunteered their dental services in the Caribbean and in 1998 at Grise Fjord in the Arctic.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Kahane was deeply invested in Winnipeg's cultural landscape. A generous supporter of numerous artistic and cultural institutions, his contributions benefited the Asper Jewish Community Campus, Manitoba Theatre Centre, Winnipeg Art Gallery, and many other organizations. After retiring from dentistry, Leonard channeled his creative energy into becoming an accomplished stone sculptor, adding "artist" to his already diverse repertoire of accomplishments. His other interests reflected his adventurous spirit, including hunting, scuba diving (which he pursued in Belize, Mexico, the Maritimes, and Hawaii), underwater archaeological studies in Manitoba waters, piloting, and racquetball. Throughout his life, Dr. Kahane remained deeply connected to his Jewish heritage, holding aspirations for a strong, prosperous Jewish community in Winnipeg that would both attract younger generations and gain complete acceptance and admiration from the broader community.
