Kenneth Gordon Biography

1929 - 1998

Kenneth Gordon was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1929. He began his artistic development at an early age and eventually pursued formal training at the Winnipeg School of Art. Following his studies, Gordon worked as a commercial artist before transitioning into a career in education. He served as an art instructor at R.B. Russell Vocational High School in Winnipeg for seventeen years, where he taught various mediums and techniques to secondary students.

Gordon’s artistic practice was deeply rooted in the traditions of Canadian landscape painting, and he frequently traveled across the country to find inspiration. He was known for taking extensive hiking and canoeing trips through the wilderness, where he produced small oil sketches en plein air. These sketches often served as the primary reference material for larger compositions completed in his studio. His subject matter was diverse, ranging from the rugged terrain of Algonquin Park and the Ottawa Valley to the coastal regions of British Columbia and Newfoundland.

In the early 1990s, Gordon focused a significant portion of his work on documenting abandoned Haida villages in the Queen Charlotte Islands (Haida Gwaii). This series of works highlighted his interest in the intersection of natural landscapes and historical human presence. Throughout his career, he remained active in the Winnipeg arts community and was a founding member of the Medea Art Gallery. He eventually retired to Winnipeg Beach, Manitoba, where he continued to paint full-time until his death in 1998.

The work of Kenneth Gordon is represented in several public and corporate collections across Canada. His paintings are held in the permanent collection of the Winnipeg Art Gallery, as well as the corporate collections of Boeing Canada, Sony of Canada, and Investors Group.
