John Der

1926 - 1996

John Der was a Canadian painter and ceramicist known for his figurative scenes, stylized portraits, and decorative ceramic works. Born in Saskatchewan, he grew up during the Great Depression, an era that significantly influenced his later thematic focus on human resilience and everyday rural and urban life. He pursued formal artistic training in western Canada, developing a strong foundation in both traditional drawing and ceramic design.

Throughout the mid-twentieth century, Der maintained a dual practice as both a painter and a studio potter. Working primarily in oils, acrylics, and clay, his style was marked by simplified forms, bold outlines, and a distinct graphic quality. His paintings often depicted stylized figures, musicians, and domestic subjects, while his ceramic works included both functional pottery and decorative sculptural panels.

Der spent much of his professional life based in Alberta and British Columbia, contributing to the regional craft and fine art communities in western Canada. Over the course of his career, his work was acquired by public institutions and civic collections, including the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. He continued to create art until his death in 1996.
