James Doran

1952 - 2016 RCA

James Doran, RCA, was a Canadian sculptor and enamel artist born in Vancouver, British Columbia. He relocated to Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1967 and attended the University of Manitoba, completing a Bachelor of Science degree in 1976 with a focus on computer science, physics, and astronomy. Following his academic training in the sciences, he shifted his focus to visual art, establishing a studio practice centered on sculpture and metalworking.

Doran specialized in high-precision metal sculpture and enamel on electroformed copper. His technique allowed him to create intricate three-dimensional forms and realistic objects utilizing applied enamel for color and surface texture. Parallel to his studio production, Doran researched technical metal and enameling processes, published writings on enameling techniques, and delivered the keynote address at the International Enamelist Society Conference in 1995.

In 2007, Doran was inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA) in recognition of his contributions to Canadian sculpture. He lived and worked in Winnipeg until his death in 2016. His work is held in permanent public and institutional holdings, including the collection of the Canada Council Art Bank.
