Un homme et son péché

Serge Brunoni (1938–2020) was a Canadian painter born in Ligny-en-Barrois, France. He spent his early life in Europe, completing his mandatory military service with the French Army in North Africa during the late 1950s. In 1959, Brunoni emigrated to Canada, initially settling in Three Rivers (Trois-Rivières), Quebec. Before devoting himself full-time to visual art in the early 1970s, he worked in a variety of industries, including forestry, land surveying, and steel manufacturing.

Self-taught as a painter, Brunoni developed a studio practice focused on oil painting. His early subjects drew inspiration from the Laurentian landscape and the rural wilderness of Quebec. He worked primarily outdoors, employing a plein-air approach characterized by direct, rapid brushwork, strong dynamic compositions, and a rich palette applied with palette knives and broad brushes.

Over the course of his career, Brunoni expanded his subject matter to include urban landscapes, depicting city life, streetscapes, and traffic in Montreal, Quebec City, and Trois-Rivières across various seasons and weather conditions. He also produced figurative compositions and countryside genre scenes that documented everyday Canadian life.

Brunoni maintained an active career based in Quebec for over four decades until his death in Trois-Rivières in 2020. His artwork is represented in public, corporate, and municipal collections throughout Canada, including the collection of the Musée Pop in Trois-Rivières and the permanent collection of the Ville de Trois-Rivières.
