Aurora

Stainless Steel (316, marine quality, for inside or outside elements), 2024
20 x 44 x 19 in (50.8 x 111.8 x 48.3 cm)
“Aurora” was created by Cathryn Jenkins in the artist's studio on Salt Spring island. Cathryn is well known in Western Canada for her large wildlife sculptures, especially of the Grizzly Bear. A Polar Bear was a new subject for Cathryn, and she took this project on with full intent to create a beautiful rendition of our great Northern Bear. “Aurora" is so named for the Canadian North where our polar bears live, and for the lustrous reflective colours that Aurora's medium can take on where ever she is placed. Cathryn created the original model in plastiline ,which is a clay like material that does not dry thus allowing the sculptor to constantly make changes in the creation of the work. Finally, a 44” sculpture was completed that embodied the downward weight and movement, and essence of a Polar Bear. “Aurora” was created with just enough indication of bone and muscle, under one surface of a design oriented smooth fur coat, that her line and form transformed perfectly into metal. Casting with molten stainless steel, and polished into a mercury like finish “Aurora" is a fluid contemporary sculpture.

Cathryn Jenkins

Cathryn Jenkins currently lives and works on Salt Spring Island, BC, as an award winning Canadian artist, known for her large sculptures of Canadian Wildlife.

As the daughter of prominent Canadian sculptor, Fran Jenkins, Cathryn spent many hours in her mother's studio learning about the qualities of different stone and the relationship between the artist and medium while gaining an understanding of line, form and the joy of sculpture.

Her own stylized representational forms, in stone, steel and bronze, combine the pleasure of touch and the appeal of strong lines. The skillful union of these key elements, consistently present in all of Cathryn's work, allows the creation of unmatched, timeless works of art.

All of Jenkin's work is to be touched! Its tactile appeal becomes a part of the living area for which it is created. Her sculpture becomes an integral part of it's space; a familiar presence to which an understanding and relationship soon develops.

Cathryn's series of sought after wildlife sculptures continue to hold places of pride among any private and corporate collections.
