Eric Ouimet

Eric Ouimet is a Canadian artist whose work celebrates the landscapes, architecture, and everyday moments that define life on the prairies. Working primarily in acrylic on panel, he creates bold, contemporary paintings that transform familiar places into striking compositions through vibrant colour, dramatic light, and clean, graphic forms.

Ouimet grew up on a grain farm near St. Agathe, Manitoba that has been in his family for over 150 years. Outside of school and working on the farm, Eric often spent hours a day drawing vast country estates and sprawling floor plans which became a lifelong admiration for architecture. In university, Ouimet specialised in Graphic Design and graduated from l’Université de Saint-Boniface before working in television as an award-winning motion graphics designer and creating logos and other branding material for many Western Canadian companies. He gravitated towards artists like Andy Warhol, Edward Hopper, and David Hockney for their unique depictions of minutiae around them; he credits these artists as sources of inspiration in his own work. Beginning with colour blocking to create his unique contrasts and colour combinations, Ouimet then hand prints details in black ink or paint.

Whether depicting a century-old building, a quiet suburban street, or a vast prairie horizon, his work is cinematic in nature with a distinctive contemporary style. A defining feature of Ouimet’s practice is his ability to weave subtle stories into his compositions. Rather than placing people at the centre of the scene, he captures the quiet moments that make a place feel lived in. These understated narratives add warmth, nostalgia, and a touch of humour, encouraging viewers to find their own memories within each painting.

His paintings have found homes in private and public collections throughout Canada and around the world. In addition to his original works, Ouimet produces limited-edition hand-pulled screen prints, reflecting the same craftsmanship and appreciation for the places that shape our memories.

Through every piece, Eric Ouimet seeks to create paintings that are both timeless and deeply rooted in place. His Métis heritage informs his connection to the land in subtle but meaningful ways and currently lives on the banks of the Red River in Winnipeg with his husband, where the ever-changing landscape continues to inspire his work.
