Mayberry Fine Art welcomes Jack Bishop! Jack Bishop is originally from Quispamsis, NB and received a BFA from NSCAD in 2007. He now lives and works in Halifax. Bishop has received creation grants from Arts NB, Arts NS, and the Canada Council for the Arts.
He was recently included in “The Painting Project”, a major survey exhibition of contemporary painting in Canada at Galerie L’UQAM in Montreal. His work is in numerous public and private collections across Canada. Jack Bishop: “My paintings have had the recurrent subject matter of driving for some time now, but my recent works have become [more] autobiographical. Influenced by years of my wife, dog and I regularly travelling the highway back and forth between Halifax, NS and Saint John, NB. Drawing from memories of my personal experience and by also channelling some favourite music for inspiration, these paintings have become like psychological self-portraits, where colour becomes transcendent; the paint carving light and space into abstraction.
While this [body of work] has a more personal sentiment than what I’ve made in the past, the appropriated song lyrics which I have titled the works create a pop culture reference that frames the paintings into a conceptual narrative; giving a level of atmosphere to the work and inclusivity to the viewer. I like to think about the paintings like tracks of music from a personal playlist you would listen to while coasting down the highway on a road trip.”
