Artists : Les Automatistes

The Montreal group of painters who would become known as the Automatistes formed around the charismatic figure of, abstract painter, Paul-êmile Borduas. In the early years of the 1940s, Borduas became a passionate advocate of a truly spontaneous or “automatic” form of painting. In this way of thinking, Borduas was inspired by the stream-of-consciousness writing of the French surrealist poet, Andre Breton.
