The Excursion
John MacDonald - 2018
58 x 62 in
Mixed Media on Board
Tom drives a party of women of an excursion, the transitioning of an object through space in this case a wagon. The image is parted down the middle by a sign pole, a transition of one space into another is both physically real and psychological; in essence a doorway. Inspired by a suite of paintings Willem de Kooning made on discarded doors that he chose not to use while building his new studio on Long Island. The use of doors in my paintings are used as a metaphor for expanding a confined dimension or narrative space. Acting as a door to a different dimension; an alternative way of viewing Tom in relation to Himsilf and to women. I choose to retain a slight photographic quality to the two central women as an homage to the photographic source material.
